Getting started
Create your account, set up a school, open a school year, enroll students, and enter your first grades in RecordGrade.

1. Create an account
- RegisterOpen /register, enter your name, email, and password, and submit.
- Confirm emailUse the link in the verification email before signing in for full access.
- Log inReturn anytime at /login. Use Forgot password if you need a reset.
2. Create or join a school
RecordGrade is multi-school: one login can belong to several schools. After login you pick an active school from Settings → My Schools (/school/select).
- Create a school if you are the first admin for your campus. You become the owner with full permissions.
- Join an existing school with the school’s join code: on My Schools click Join School, enter the code, then wait for an admin to approve you under Settings → Users. (Admins enable this with Allow Others to Join when editing the school.) Full steps: Accounts & permissions → Join codes.
3. Billing and free trial
Schools need an active plan for gradebook features. From Settings → Billing choose a plan (monthly or annual). New schools typically start with a free trial when available. Without a valid subscription, the app routes you to billing instead of the gradebook.
4. Configure the school once
Do these before heavy grade entry—they apply across years:
- Course categories (Math, English, Elective, …)
- Unit test patterns (Quiz / Midterm / Final weights)
- Grade scale (percent → letter → GPA points)
- Report settings (what appears on report cards and transcripts)
- Optional: behavior groups, graduation levels
Prefer a checklist UI? Use the guided setup wizard at /setup.
5. Open a school year
Go to Years → Manage Years and create a year with start/end dates and terms (e.g. Q1–Q4 or Semesters). Select that year in the app’s year/term selector so every roster page filters correctly.
See Years & enrollments for full detail.
6. Add and enroll students
- Add students under Students → Manage Students (or import).
- Enroll them in the school year under Years → Enrollments and set each student’s grade level for that year.
Year enrollment is required before course enrollments, attendance, behavior, grades, and most records.
7. Build courses and enrollments
- Create graded courses with units under Assignments → Manage Courses.
- Optionally create no-grade courses under Assignments → Manage No-Grade.
- Enroll year-enrolled students in courses under Course Enrollments / No-Grade Enrollments.
8. Enter grades
Open Record → Test Scores. Choose the year and course, add tests from the unit’s test pattern, enter scores in the unit grid, and lock units when they should appear on the report card. See Recording test scores and keyboard shortcuts.
